We may have been spared Bret’s wrath but the trail he left has again jolted us into the reality that we are very unprepared for a serious natural disaster. We cannot do anything about acts of nature but we can certainly put measures in place to provide immediate relief to those affected. One of the most serious problems we have in this country is flooding. With or without Bret, flooding remains an everyday problem. Within minutes of rainfall Port of Spain transforms into a Styrofoam river, with images of people leaping and doing acrobatics to escape the floods.

The torment of trying to get transport out of the city and the gridlock traffic usually follows. In the aftermath of Bret the nation saw images and videos of families bailing out knee- and waist-high waters from their homes.
