Public Health Expert In Favour Of Unvaccinated People Paying Part Of Their Bill For COVID Treatment

A member of the medical fraternity is in agreement with the suggestion that unvaccinated people foot a portion of their bill if they require treatment at hospital for COVID-19.   Last week, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the government will soon limit how much it spends on treating people at hospital for COVID-19.   Mr. Holness noted that other countries have started asking patients to foot the bill for coronavirus hospital care.    Associate Professor of Public Health Alverston Bailey says the move would increase vaccine take up and reduce the strain on the public health system.    “Ninety-eight per cent of persons in hospitals from COVID are unvaccinated and therefore the cost is tremendous. This has caused a tremendous drain on the economy. It has stressed out the health sector, it has prevented persons with regular medical problems from accessing care,” he indicated.    Dr. Bailey said a firm stance must be taken to reduce the number of people hospitalised with the virus due to vaccine hesitancy.     “If you get infected from COVID now and are hospitalised, it is basically, I would like to describe, as an attempted suicide because we have the medication in place to prevent you from being hospitalised, to prevent you from dying. And therefore, if you refuse to be vaccinated and have to be hospitalised – at tremendous cost to the country – then in my opinion, all unvaccinated persons who are on hospitalised and have to receive intensive care should be asked to pay a percentage of the cost,” he insisted.
